Protection of Cable and Pipe Penetrations
Besides the use of intumescent coatings for maintaining constructions stability, load capacity and increasing its fire resistance, important segments of passive fire protection are also systems for isolation of cable and pipe penetration. The development of technology has resulted in a thick network of energy and signal cables in modern buildings, from industrial to public and residential buildings.
In spite of the insulation as integral part of the cables which usually makes them a low combustible material, in case of fire cables still significantly contribute to the total fire load, because they can transfer fire from one part of the building to the other through penetrations and holes in the walls and ceilings.
Intumescent coatings provide a solution in these cases too, as a component of insulation systems that prevent the spread of heat, fire and smoke through cable and pipe penetration. Their composition is similar to intumescent coatings for the protection of building structures, but they have a lower expansion factor. Their protective role in the fire is the prevention of fire spreading through cable penetrations and the preservation of the cable functionality.
Our solution in this area is a system based on FIRESTOP CF 120 coating. The system contains several components that protect the penetration in the fire barrier through which cable and pipe installations pass: cable bundle or tube, cable carrier, then plates and pipe shell of the hard-pressed rock wool that provide closing and filling of openings in the walls and FIRESTOP CF 120 used for coating of all other elements.
Similar to the protection mechanism on steel and wooden structures, intumescent coating FIRESTOP CF 120 forms insulating carbon material in case of fire, which in combination with other elements of the system serves as a fire barrier on cables and pipes for a certain period of time.
